What to Expect on GranGuanche Audax Trail

GranGuanche Audax Trail is the most demanding version of the GranGuanche series, taking riders across the rugged volcanic landscapes of the Canary Islands on a route built for mountain bikes and adventurous bikepackers. Linking five islands by ferry, it combines technical singletrack, volcanic trails, remote gravel roads, and spectacular mountain scenery into one of Europe’s toughest off-road bikepacking challenges.

The route covers approximately 900 kilometres with around 22,000 metres of elevation gain, starting in Órzola, Lanzarote, and finishing on El Hierro. Riders cross Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and El Hierro, tackling a challenging mix of rugged trails, lava fields, rocky tracks, and high mountain paths. Frequent technical sections and extended hike-a-bike segments make this route best suited to experienced mountain bikers.

Like the other GranGuanche events, Audax Trail follows an Audax format rather than a traditional race. Riders have one week to complete the fixed route, with drafting and riding together permitted. Participants remain fully responsible for their own navigation, accommodation, food, ferry logistics, and mechanical repairs, making self-sufficiency a key part of the adventure.

From black volcanic deserts and dramatic coastal cliffs to ancient forests and the high-altitude trails surrounding Mount Teide, GranGuanche Audax Trail offers an unforgettable journey through one of the world’s most unique island landscapes. Combining technical riding, relentless climbing, and the spirit of exploration, it stands as one of the premier mountain bikepacking adventures in Europe.
