What to Expect on Pain au Chocolat

Pain au Chocolat is a self-supported road bikepacking event that explores some of France’s most beautiful and lesser-known regions. Starting and finishing in Grenoble, the route winds through the Drôme, Cévennes, Vercors, Vaucluse, Gard, and Ardèche, linking quiet mountain roads, deep canyons, dramatic rock formations, and charming villages.

The 2026 edition covers 1,100 kilometres with approximately 19,000 metres of elevation gain. Designed for adventurous road cyclists, the fixed GPX route prioritises scenic back roads over busy highways, creating a demanding but rewarding journey through some of France’s finest cycling terrain. The organisers recommend road or all-road bikes with tyres of at least 30 mm and low gearing for the many long climbs.

Pain au Chocolat follows a strict self-supported philosophy. Riders are responsible for their own navigation, food, accommodation, and mechanical repairs, with no outside assistance permitted. Alongside the solo category, the event also offers a Party-Pace option for riders who prefer a more social, non-competitive experience while still embracing the spirit of bikepacking.

With its spectacular mountain scenery, quiet roads, and relaxed community atmosphere, Pain au Chocolat offers a refreshing take on ultra-distance road cycling. It is an event where great riding, memorable landscapes, and the occasional bakery stop are all part of the adventure.
