What to Expect on Basajaun

Basajaun is a self-supported gravel ultracycling challenge that explores the wild forests, arid plains, and remote mountain ranges of northern Spain. Organised by Transibérica Ultracycling, the event is inspired by the Basque mythological guardian of the forest, celebrating both adventure and the preservation of nature’s most untamed landscapes.

The 2026 edition covers approximately 890 kilometres with more than 15,000 metres of elevation gain, starting and finishing in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain. The fixed route is around 70% off-road, taking riders through the lush beech forests of Urbasa and Irati, across the semi-desert landscapes of Bardenas Reales, and into the rugged Sierra de la Demanda around Pico San Lorenzo at over 2,200 metres.

Basajaun follows a strict self-supported philosophy. Riders are responsible for their own navigation, food, accommodation, and mechanical repairs, with no outside assistance permitted. The event is completed in a single non-stop stage, meaning the clock continues to run while riders rest, eat, or sleep, making strategy and self-knowledge just as important as physical endurance.

Often described as the northern twin of Badlands, Basajaun combines dense forests, vast plains, desert terrain, and high mountain passes into one of Europe’s most diverse gravel ultras. It is a race that rewards resilience, preparation, and a deep appreciation for the wild landscapes of the Basque Country and beyond.
