What to Expect on Gran Diagonal

GranDiagonal is a self-supported ultra-cycling adventure that takes riders on an unforgettable journey across Portugal from coast to coast. Covering approximately 1,000 kilometres and more than 16,000 metres of climbing, the route showcases the incredible diversity of one of Europe’s oldest countries, connecting remote villages, mountain ranges, rolling countryside, and endless Atlantic landscapes.

Designed for experienced endurance cyclists and bikepackers, GranDiagonal is a true test of resilience, strategy, and self-sufficiency. Riders must manage their own navigation, nutrition, sleep, and mechanicals while racing against the clock through a constantly changing landscape. There are no support crews and no shortcuts — only the rider, the road ahead, and the decisions made along the way.

Starting on Portugal’s northwestern Atlantic coast and finishing near the southern border with Spain, the route traverses quiet secondary roads, high mountain passes, historic towns, and vast rural regions that many visitors never experience. The challenge lies not only in the distance and elevation but also in maintaining momentum through days of continuous riding.

More than a race, GranDiagonal is an exploration of Portugal’s landscapes, culture, and people. It rewards those willing to embrace long days in the saddle, moments of solitude, and the freedom that only ultra-distance cycling can provide. For riders seeking a demanding road-based bikepacking challenge, GranDiagonal offers a unique opportunity to experience an entire country from one end to the other.
