Gravel Birds Classic is a self-supported bikepacking adventure through the vast landscapes of Portugal’s Baixo Alentejo, where endless gravel roads, rolling hills, and remote villages create one of Southern Europe’s most distinctive ultra-distance experiences. More than a race, Gravel Birds is designed as a personal challenge that celebrates exploration, self-reliance, and the unique character of the region.
Starting and finishing in Castro Verde, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the Classic route covers approximately 750 kilometres with around 11,000 metres of climbing, while remaining 75% off-road. Riders traverse the rugged Serra do Caldeirão, the dramatic Guadiana Valley, the Atlantic cliffs of the Costa Vicentina, and historic towns such as Mértola, experiencing an ever-changing mix of gravel tracks, quiet backroads, and flowing doubletrack.
Gravel Birds follows a strict self-supported philosophy. There are no support crews, no outside assistance, and no podium prizes. Riders are responsible for their own navigation, resupply, accommodation, and mechanical repairs, making smart decision-making just as important as physical endurance.
Although the route never reaches high altitudes, its relentless succession of short, steep climbs makes it significantly tougher than the elevation profile suggests. Combined with the isolation of the Alentejo and long stretches between services, Gravel Birds rewards patience, preparation, and efficient pacing.
Blending exceptional gravel riding, rich cultural heritage, and one of Portugal’s most beautiful natural landscapes, Gravel Birds has become a benchmark event for riders seeking an authentic bikepacking adventure in Southern Europe.

A Gravel Bike is the right tool for Gravel Birds Ultracycling. Set it up with 45-50mm Tubeless rubber and gear it low — a 38-40T (1x) chainring and 10-51T cassette will keep you spinning on the steeper sections.
We rate Gravel Birds Ultracycling as Advanced overall. Riders should be ready for rough, technical terrain for a good stretch of the route, steadily rolling, with a healthy amount of climbing elevation gain, and mild and generally comfortable conditions.
Mark your calendar for May 9, 2027 — Gravel Birds Ultracycling's spring timing means when weather can still be unpredictable, so a flexible kit is worth packing.
Surface-wise, expect gravel throughout Gravel Birds Ultracycling — 45-50mm Tubeless tires are a safe bet.
