What to Expect on Lakes ‘n’ Knödel

Lakes ‘n’ Knödel is a self-supported gravel bikepacking adventure that celebrates two things: spectacular Alpine riding and traditional mountain cuisine. Starting in Fuschl am See, Austria, the event takes riders across Austria and southern Germany on a challenging route that links remote gravel roads, alpine huts, crystal-clear lakes, and some of the best Knödel stops in the Alps.

The route covers approximately 725 kilometres with around 14,000 metres of elevation gain, starting in Fuschl am See and finishing near Bregenz, Austria. Riders follow a fixed GPX route through the Salzkammergut, Chiemgau, Karwendel Mountains, and Vorarlberg, tackling a mix of gravel roads, forest tracks, mountain passes, and quiet paved sections while staying at traditional alpine huts along the way.

Lakes ‘n’ Knödel follows a strict self-supported philosophy. Riders are responsible for their own navigation, food, accommodation, and mechanical repairs, with no outside assistance permitted. Rather than focusing solely on speed, the event embraces the social side of bikepacking, encouraging riders to experience local mountain hospitality and cuisine throughout the journey.

Combining demanding Alpine terrain with unforgettable scenery and authentic Austrian culture, Lakes ‘n’ Knödel offers a unique bikepacking experience. It is an adventure where epic climbs are rewarded not only with incredible views, but also with a well-earned plate of Knödel.
