What to Expect on Tuscany Trail

Tuscany Trail is the world’s largest bikepacking event, bringing together thousands of cyclists each year to experience the iconic landscapes of Tuscany at their own pace. Unlike a traditional race, it follows a “no race” philosophy—there are no podiums, rankings, or time limits, just the freedom to explore one of Italy’s most beautiful regions by bike.

The main route is a 445-kilometre loop with approximately 5,300 metres of climbing, starting and finishing in Campiglia Marittima. Riders follow a fixed GPS route through Tuscany’s famous Strade Bianche, rolling vineyards, cypress-lined hills, dense forests, medieval villages, and historic cities such as Siena, Monteriggioni, and Pienza.

Although there is no competition, Tuscany Trail remains a true self-supported adventure. Participants are responsible for their own navigation, food, accommodation, and mechanical repairs, choosing when to ride, where to stop, and how many days to spend on the route. Most riders complete the journey in around four days, but there is no pressure to rush.

Designed for both gravel and mountain bikes, the route is highly rideable and technically accessible, making it an excellent introduction to bikepacking while still offering enough distance and climbing to challenge experienced riders. Exclusive access to private gravel roads and carefully curated tracks ensures a unique experience that showcases the very best of Tuscany.

Blending spectacular scenery, Italian culture, and the freedom of self-supported travel, Tuscany Trail is less about racing the clock and more about embracing the adventure—one white road, espresso, and unforgettable sunset at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is Tuscany Trail?

Riders taking on Tuscany Trail will cover 445 km and climb roughly 5300 m over the course of the route.

What bike do I need?

For Tuscany Trail, we'd recommend a Gravel Bike — plan on 45-50mm Tubeless tires and a wide-range drivetrain, something like a 38-40T (1x) chainring paired with a 10-51T cassette, to handle the terrain comfortably.

How difficult is it?

We rate Tuscany Trail as Intermediate overall. Riders should be ready for rough, technical terrain for a good stretch of the route, fairly flat elevation gain, and cool conditions.

When does it take place?

Mark your calendar for December 3, 2026 — Tuscany Trail's winter timing means so cold-weather gear and shorter daylight hours are part of the planning.

What surface is it?

Tuscany Trail's route is gravel. Plan your tire choice around 45-50mm Tubeless for the best combination of speed and comfort.
