What to Expect on Utrecht Ultra

Utrecht Ultra is a self-supported road ultra that combines the freedom of route planning with the excitement of a shared race experience. Starting and finishing in Utrecht, the Netherlands, the event challenges riders to cover 1,000 kilometres with approximately 6,000 metres of elevation gain within a 100-hour time limit.

Rather than following a single GPX track, Utrecht Ultra uses a hybrid format. Riders begin on a fixed route before navigating between three mandatory checkpoints in neighbouring countries, choosing their own roads between each section. Every checkpoint includes a short mandatory parcours, rewarding strategic route planning as much as endurance. Around 98% of the route is on tarmac, making it ideal for road bikes while still featuring occasional gravel sectors.

The event follows a strict self-supported philosophy. Riders must manage their own navigation, accommodation, food, and mechanical repairs without outside assistance. There are no prizes for the fastest finishers, placing the focus on personal achievement, fair play, and the spirit of ultra-distance cycling.

The route explores some of the finest cycling roads in Belgium and the Ardennes, taking in iconic cobbled climbs around Oudenaarde, the river valleys near Dinant, and the rolling forests surrounding La Roche-en-Ardenne and Houffalize before returning to Utrecht. Blending strategic route choice, classic cycling terrain, and a welcoming atmosphere, Utrecht Ultra has quickly become one of Europe’s most distinctive road ultra events.
