Driftless Dagger is a self-supported gravel ultra that explores the rugged Driftless Region of the American Midwest—an area untouched by the last Ice Age and renowned for its steep river valleys, limestone bluffs, and relentless rolling terrain. Rather than relying on towering mountain passes, the challenge comes from hundreds of short, punchy climbs that gradually wear riders down over the course of the race.
The flagship route covers approximately 550 miles (885 km) with around 40,000 feet (12,200 metres) of elevation gain. Starting and finishing at Chestnut Mountain Resort in Galena, Illinois, the fixed GPX route traverses Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, following a mix of gravel roads, quiet backroads, and remote rural landscapes through the heart of the Driftless Area.
Driftless Dagger follows a strict self-supported philosophy. Riders are responsible for their own navigation, food, accommodation, and mechanical repairs, with no support crews or aid stations. Most participants complete the course in 2–5 days, where sleep strategy, nutrition, and efficient resupply are just as important as fitness. The event also features a pairs category and a shorter Baby Dagger option for riders looking to tackle the same terrain over a reduced distance.
With its endless gravel roads, scenic farming communities, and deceptively demanding terrain, Driftless Dagger has quickly established itself as one of the premier gravel ultras in the United States. It’s a race that proves you don’t need high mountains to create an unforgettable endurance challenge—just a hundred relentless hills.
