What to Expect on GranGuanche Audax Road

GranGuanche is a legendary self-supported bikepacking adventure that traverses the volcanic landscapes of Spain’s Canary Islands. Linking multiple islands by ferry, the route delivers an unforgettable mix of lava fields, desert tracks, pine forests, high mountain roads, and Atlantic coastlines, making it one of Europe’s most unique ultra-distance cycling experiences.

The event starts in Órzola, Lanzarote, and follows a fixed route across five Canary Islands, connected by four ferry crossings. Several route options are available, including Audax Road (approximately 750 km / 17,000 m), Audax Gravel (approximately 800 km / 17,000 m), and Audax Trail (approximately 900 km / 22,000 m). Each route offers a different balance of tarmac, gravel, technical trails, and hike-a-bike while showcasing the extraordinary diversity of the archipelago.

GranGuanche follows the principles of self-supported ultra-distance cycling, with one notable difference: in the spirit of traditional Audax events, riders are allowed to ride together and draft each other. The challenge lies in reaching each scheduled ferry on time, turning the crossings into natural checkpoints where strategy, pacing, and teamwork can be just as important as physical endurance.

From black volcanic deserts and sandy coastlines to cloud forests and the high slopes of Mount Teide, GranGuanche offers an ever-changing riding experience unlike any other. Combining demanding terrain, island-hopping logistics, and spectacular scenery, it has become one of the world’s most iconic bikepacking adventures.
