Tour Aotearoa is one of the world’s great bikepacking trips: stretching 3,000 km from Cape Reinga to Bluff it follows a combination of cycle trails, tracks, paths and lanes connected by the most enjoyable country roads available. The Tour Aotearoa route is designed to highlight the best New Zealand Cycle Trail Great Rides, Heartland Rides, and quiet back country roads. The route is designed by New Zealand cycling guidebook writer Jonathan Kennett.
A Tour Aotearoa Brevet event is also organised in February each year. The 2026 event starts in waves of 100 people per day
Based on this event's terrain, difficulty and riding style.
Riders taking on Tour Aotearoa will cover 3000 km and climb roughly 37000 m over the course of the route.
Tour Aotearoa's terrain calls for a All-Road Bike, ideally running 35-40mm Tubeless tires. On the drivetrain side, a 40-42T (1x) chainring matched to a 10-44T cassette gives enough range for the climbing involved.
Tour Aotearoa carries an overall difficulty rating of Extreme. The terrain itself is a mix of surfaces, with some rougher sections mixed in, the climbing is relentlessly mountainous, climbing almost the entire way, and conditions tend to run mild and generally comfortable.
Tour Aotearoa takes place on February 17, 2027. That puts it in summer, with long daylight hours, though heat can become a real factor.
Tour Aotearoa's route is all-road. Plan your tire choice around 35-40mm Tubeless for the best combination of speed and comfort.
