Desertus is a self-supported ultra-distance bikepacking adventure that crosses the heart of the Iberian Peninsula, from the Basque Country to Andalusia. Inspired by the spirit of rally-raid expeditions, the event combines free-route navigation with mandatory sectors, creating a unique challenge where strategy and endurance are equally important.
The 2027 edition covers approximately 1,300 kilometres with around 13,000 metres of elevation gain. Riders must complete six mandatory sectors, totalling about 200 kilometres, while choosing their own route to connect them. The journey takes participants through some of Spain’s wildest landscapes, including deserts, remote mountain ranges, forests, and rugged gravel tracks.
DESERTUS follows a strict self-supported philosophy. Riders are responsible for their own navigation, food, accommodation, and mechanical repairs, with no outside assistance permitted. The event has a 7-day maximum time limit, demanding careful pacing, efficient resupply, and strong decision-making throughout the journey.
With its hybrid format of fixed sectors and free navigation, DESERTUS offers a truly distinctive ultra-cycling experience. It is an adventure that rewards resilience, creativity, and the ability to adapt while crossing one of Europe’s most demanding and beautiful territories.
Desertus Bikus is a self-supported ultra-endurance gravel adventure through arid and remote desert regions. Riders cover hundreds of kilometers of gravel tracks, sandy trails, and rocky terrain, far from resupply points. Participants carry all necessary gear, plan food and water, and navigate independently. The course tests stamina, resilience, and technical riding skill, offering a raw and immersive experience in expansive desert landscapes, with endless horizons, dunes, and solitude defining the adventure.
Based on this event's terrain, difficulty and riding style.
Desertus covers 1300 km with 13000 m of climbing along the way — a fairly gentle profile from start to finish.
A Gravel Bike is the right tool for Desertus. Set it up with 45-50mm Tubeless rubber and gear it low — a 38-40T (1x) chainring and 10-51T cassette will keep you spinning on the steeper sections.
We rate Desertus as Advanced overall. Riders should be ready for rough, technical terrain for a good stretch of the route, steadily rolling, with a healthy amount of climbing elevation gain, and mild and generally comfortable conditions.
Desertus runs on April 10, 2027, placing it firmly in the spring riding season, when weather can still be unpredictable, so a flexible kit is worth packing.
Desertus runs primarily on gravel, and we'd recommend 45-50mm Tubeless tires to handle it comfortably.
