The Grand Escape reimagines bikepacking by removing the pressure of racing and putting the focus back on the journey. Organised by Bikepacking Adventures, the series features three fully paved self-supported adventures across Italy & Slovenia, Germany & Austria, and Tuscany, inviting riders to slow down, explore, and experience some of Europe’s finest cycling roads at their own pace.
Rather than competing against the clock, participants follow carefully crafted loop routes of 500–600 kilometres, designed to be completed over 3–5 days. The three events include Italy & Slovenia (550 km / 7,000 m), Germany & Austria (500 km / 4,500 m), and Tuscany (600 km / 7,500 m), all taking place exclusively on quiet paved roads, cycle paths, and scenic backroads.
The Grand Escape follows a strict self-supported philosophy. Riders are responsible for their own navigation, food, accommodation, and mechanical repairs, with no outside assistance permitted. There are no rankings, no cut-off times, and no podiums—just the freedom to ride, stop, and explore whenever and wherever you choose.
By combining beautiful road cycling, carefully scouted routes, and a relaxed atmosphere, The Grand Escape offers a refreshing alternative to traditional ultra-distance events. It is designed for riders who value unforgettable roads, meaningful experiences, and the simple joy of travelling by bike.
Based on this event's terrain, difficulty and riding style.
At 600 km with 7500 m of elevation gain, The Grand Escape is roughly the distance of 14 marathons back to back, with climbing that adds up to close to a third of the height of Mount Everest.
A Gravel Bike is the right tool for The Grand Escape. Set it up with 45-50mm Tubeless rubber and gear it low — a 38-40T (1x) chainring and 10-51T cassette will keep you spinning on the steeper sections.
The Grand Escape carries an overall difficulty rating of Intermediate. The terrain itself is rough, technical terrain for a good stretch of the route, the climbing is fairly flat, and conditions tend to run mild and generally comfortable.
The Grand Escape takes place on September 30, 2026. That puts it in autumn, as conditions start cooling but daylight hours are shrinking.
The Grand Escape's route is gravel. Plan your tire choice around 45-50mm Tubeless for the best combination of speed and comfort.
