Rhino Run is a 3,050-kilometer off-road bikepacking event in Namibia, starting from the capital city of Windhoek and traversing some of the most remote and starkly beautiful desert and savanna landscapes in southern Africa. Namibia is one of the least densely populated countries on Earth, and its interior is dominated by the Namib and Kalahari deserts, dramatic canyon systems, and vast open plains that are home to genuinely wild populations of rhinos, elephants, and other African wildlife — giving the event its name and underscoring the remote, expedition-level character of the route. The off-road terrain ranges from graded gravel roads to rougher 4×4 tracks across an environment with minimal infrastructure and long distances between any form of resupply.
The October timing falls in Namibia's dry season, when temperatures are warm but the harshest summer heat has not yet arrived, and the desert landscapes are at their most dramatic and photogenic. At 3,050 kilometers, Rhino Run is a genuinely expedition-scale undertaking, demanding serious self-sufficiency, water management, and route planning given the isolation and sparse population of much of the Namibian interior. The event represents one of the more ambitious and remote ultra-cycling challenges on the African continent.

At 3050 km with 30000 m of elevation gain, Rhino Run is roughly the distance of 72 marathons back to back, with climbing that adds up to more than 3.4 times the height of Mount Everest.
For Rhino Run, we'd recommend a Hardtail MTB — plan on 2.2-2.4" Tubeless tires and a wide-range drivetrain, something like a 30-32T (1x) chainring paired with a 10-52T cassette, to handle the terrain comfortably.
Expect a Extreme-tier challenge at Rhino Run — relentlessly mountainous, climbing almost the entire way climbing over seriously technical, unforgiving terrain throughout, with mild and generally comfortable weather typical for the time of year.
Mark your calendar for October 12, 2026 — Rhino Run's spring timing means when weather can still be unpredictable, so a flexible kit is worth packing.
Rhino Run runs primarily on off-road, and we'd recommend 2.2-2.4" Tubeless tires to handle it comfortably.
