ACAY is a gravel ultra-cycling event in Salta province, northwestern Argentina, offering two distance options of 760 and 1,430 kilometers through one of South America’s most dramatic high-altitude landscapes. The Salta region sits at the convergence of the high Andean puna plateau, vividly colored canyon systems, and remote indigenous communities, with much of any extended route through the area likely climbing into territory well above 3,000 meters. This part of Argentina shares the same extraordinary geological character found in the neighboring Jujuy province, including multicolored rock formations, high desert terrain, and salt flats that rank among the most visually striking cycling landscapes anywhere in the world.
The substantial gap between the two distance options — 760 versus 1,430 kilometers — suggests ACAY offers riders a genuine choice between a serious but contained week-long challenge and a true expedition-scale ultra-distance undertaking through the high Andes. August timing falls within the Southern Hemisphere’s winter, meaning riders should expect cold conditions, particularly at altitude and overnight, even as daytime temperatures in the high desert can still be intense under direct sun.
Based on this event's terrain, difficulty and riding style.
At 1430 km with 22000 m of elevation gain, ACAY is roughly the distance of 34 marathons back to back, with climbing that adds up to more than 2.5 times the height of Mount Everest.
A Gravel Bike is the right tool for ACAY. Set it up with 45-50mm Tubeless rubber and gear it low — a 38-40T (1x) chainring and 10-51T cassette will keep you spinning on the steeper sections.
We rate ACAY as Extreme overall. Riders should be ready for rough, technical terrain for a good stretch of the route, consistently demanding, with sustained climbing elevation gain, and mild and generally comfortable conditions.
ACAY runs on August 31, 2027, placing it firmly in the winter riding season, so cold-weather gear and shorter daylight hours are part of the planning.
ACAY runs primarily on gravel, and we'd recommend 45-50mm Tubeless tires to handle it comfortably.
