What to Expect on Equinox Sun Race

Equinox Sun Race challenges riders to chase the daylight across England in a unique self-supported ultra that follows the path of the sun from sunrise to sunset—and beyond. Organised by the Solstice Series, the event combines endurance, strategy, and adventure in a coast-to-coast-to-coast journey across northern England.

Starting and finishing in Tynemouth, England, the route covers approximately 400–450 kilometres with 4,500–5,000 metres of elevation gain. Riders head west from the North Sea to the Irish Sea before deciding whether to ride through the night to beat the next sunrise back on the east coast or rest and complete the challenge before the final sunset of the autumn equinox. The route is entirely on paved roads and follows a fixed GPX.

Equinox Sun Race follows a strict self-supported philosophy. Riders are responsible for their own navigation, food, accommodation, and mechanical repairs, with no outside assistance permitted. GPS tracking, mandatory safety equipment, and the event’s sunrise-to-sunset concept create a distinctive challenge where time management is just as important as physical endurance.

Blending scenic roads, rolling hills, and an innovative format inspired by the changing seasons, Equinox Sun Race offers a fresh take on ultra-distance road cycling. It is an unforgettable challenge for riders looking to test themselves against both the landscape and the rhythm of the sun.
