What to Expect on Mountains of the Merfynion 2026

Mountains of the Merfynion is a self-supported mixed-terrain bikepacking event that showcases the very best of Welsh cycling. Organised by The Perfidious Albion, the route blends quiet mountain roads, flowing gravel tracks, technical singletrack, and hike-a-bike sections into an adventure designed specifically for gravel bikes.

The 2026 edition covers approximately 730 kilometres with 14,000 metres of elevation gain, starting and finishing at Llwyn Celyn, near Abergavenny, Wales. Around 65% of the route is paved, with the remaining sections consisting of forestry roads, gravel tracks, bridleways, and short technical trails. Riders traverse the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons), the Cambrian Mountains, and the Black Mountains, tackling some of Wales’ toughest climbs and most spectacular scenery.

The event follows a strict self-supported format. Riders are responsible for their own navigation, food, accommodation, and mechanical repairs, with no outside assistance permitted. A series of unmanned selfie checkpoints and a demanding six-day time limit add to the challenge, while mandatory safety equipment reflects the remote and exposed nature of the route.

With its constantly changing terrain, relentless climbing, and unforgettable Welsh landscapes, Mountains of the Merfynion is one of the UK’s toughest gravel bikepacking events. It rewards versatility, resilience, and a willingness to push a gravel bike far beyond its comfort zone.
