NorthCape–Tarifa is one of the world’s longest self-supported ultra-distance cycling events, taking riders from the northernmost point of mainland Europe to its southernmost edge. Beginning beneath the midnight sun at North Cape, Norway, and finishing on the shores of Tarifa, Spain, the event is a true continental crossing through an extraordinary variety of landscapes, cultures, and climates.
The full route covers approximately 7,460 kilometres with around 80,000 metres of elevation gain, crossing 15 countries from Scandinavia to southern Spain. Riders pass through Norway, Finland, the Baltic States, Poland, Czechia, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Italy, France, Andorra, and Spain, tackling legendary climbs such as Col d’Iseran, Col du Galibier, Port d’Envalira, and Pico del Veleta, the highest rideable paved road in Europe. The event also offers shorter finish options in Helsinki (1,753 km), Bregenz (4,135 km), and Nice (5,260 km).
NorthCape–Tarifa follows a strict self-supported philosophy. Riders are responsible for their own navigation, accommodation, food, and mechanical repairs, with no outside assistance permitted. The route features nine mandatory checkpoints, but there is no time limit, allowing participants to complete the journey entirely at their own pace while embracing the spirit of long-distance adventure.
More than a race, NorthCape–Tarifa is an expedition across Europe. From Arctic tundra and endless summer daylight to the high passes of the Alps and Pyrenees before reaching the Mediterranean and the Strait of Gibraltar, it offers one of the most ambitious and rewarding bikepacking adventures ever created.
Based on this event's terrain, difficulty and riding style.
Riders taking on NorthCape-Tarifa will cover 7400 km and climb roughly 80000 m over the course of the route.
NorthCape-Tarifa's terrain calls for a Endurance Road Bike, ideally running 30-35mm Tubeless tires. On the drivetrain side, a 46/30T-50/34T (2x) chainring matched to a 10-36T cassette gives enough range for the climbing involved.
NorthCape-Tarifa carries an overall difficulty rating of Extreme. The terrain itself is mostly smooth, fast-rolling surfaces, the climbing is relentlessly mountainous, climbing almost the entire way, and conditions tend to run mild and generally comfortable.
NorthCape-Tarifa takes place on June 20, 2026. That puts it in summer, with long daylight hours, though heat can become a real factor.
NorthCape-Tarifa runs primarily on road, and we'd recommend 30-35mm Tubeless tires to handle it comfortably.
