What to Expect on Calder Divide Trail

Calder Divide Trail is a self-supported bikepacking adventure that follows the watershed of the River Calder through the rugged landscapes of West Yorkshire. Connecting ancient packhorse trails, gravel tracks, moorland bridleways, canal towpaths, and quiet country lanes, it offers a uniquely British off-road experience across one of England’s most historic cycling regions.

The signature Calder Divide Trail is a 233-kilometre (145-mile) circular route with approximately 4,000 metres of elevation gain, starting and finishing in Mytholmroyd, near Hebden Bridge. Riders cross 12 valleys, 6 moors, and 1 floodplain, weaving through the South Pennines on a varied mix of gravel, stone tracks, cobbled lanes, and flowing greenways. For the annual event, additional gravel and mountain bike route options ranging from 160 km to 236 km are also available.

The Calder Divide Trail follows a self-supported philosophy. Riders are responsible for their own navigation, food, accommodation, and mechanical repairs while following a fixed GPX route. Rather than focusing on competition, the event celebrates personal achievement, encouraging participants to experience the landscape at their own pace.

From windswept Pennine moors and historic mill towns to tranquil canals and rolling greenways, the Calder Divide Trail showcases the remarkable diversity of Yorkshire’s landscapes. Combining technical off-road riding with rich industrial heritage, it has become one of the UK’s most distinctive gravel bikepacking adventures.
