VIA Race – Chapter III is an unsupported ultra-distance road cycling race that pushes riders beyond the familiar and into the wild landscapes of Northern Europe. Covering approximately 4,000 kilometres with more than 40,000 metres of elevation gain, the third chapter begins in Amerongen, Netherlands, and finishes in Volda, Norway, crossing multiple countries and mountain ranges along the way.
Unlike traditional ultra races with a fixed GPX, VIA is a free-route event. Riders receive the locations of mandatory Gates and Refuges but are responsible for planning their own route between them. Every decision—from choosing the fastest roads to managing sleep, weather, and resupply—becomes part of the challenge, rewarding strategy as much as endurance.
Designed for road bikes, the event can be completed entirely on paved roads, although participants are free to include gravel sections if they choose. The route traverses the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, culminating in the dramatic fjords and mountains of western Norway, where the toughest climbing awaits.
VIA follows a strict unsupported philosophy. Riders must manage their own navigation, accommodation, food, and mechanical repairs, with no outside assistance permitted. More than a race, VIA has built a reputation for its welcoming community, bringing together riders who share a passion for adventure, self-reliance, and long-distance cycling.
Combining free-route strategy, epic mileage, and the spectacular landscapes of Northern Europe, VIA Race – Chapter III offers one of the most ambitious and rewarding road ultra experiences on the calendar.
Based on this event's terrain, difficulty and riding style.
At 4000 km with 40000 m of elevation gain, VIA Chapter III is roughly the distance of 95 marathons back to back, with climbing that adds up to more than 4.5 times the height of Mount Everest.
A Endurance Road Bike is the right tool for VIA Chapter III. Set it up with 30-35mm Tubeless rubber and gear it low — a 46/30T-50/34T (2x) chainring and 10-36T cassette will keep you spinning on the steeper sections.
We rate VIA Chapter III as Extreme overall. Riders should be ready for mostly smooth, fast-rolling surfaces, relentlessly mountainous, climbing almost the entire way elevation gain, and cool conditions.
VIA Chapter III takes place on July 24, 2026. That puts it in summer, with long daylight hours, though heat can become a real factor.
VIA Chapter III runs primarily on road, and we'd recommend 30-35mm Tubeless tires to handle it comfortably.
